Toblerone celebrated Iñigo's birthday

I'm not yet done with this kwento! Iñigo's birthday was made more special by Toblerone and their fun #TobleroneBirthdays gifts!

We were so lucky to have Toblerone give Iñigo three huge cakes—one for each year of his fabulous life, and each cake emblazoned with his favorite Lightning McQueen.

Okay, I know those photos show only two cakes. I somehow forgot to take a photo of the third one!

Haha, look at how Iñigo made pindot na his cakes.

Toblerone also gave us buckets of chocolates. We gave each kiddie guest chocolates and we still had lots left over. Wow!

Blowing out his candle on his Toblerone cake.
Birthday boy enjoying one of his cakes.

Happy birthday indeed. Thanks soooo much, Toblerone, for your #TobleroneBirthdays gifts!

Easy Clara Olé recipes turned Iñigo's party special!

This post is brought to you by Clara Olé.

Clara Olé threw a birthday party for Iñigo because they wanted to share with me and with my mommy readers that it's so easy to feed a lot of people with delicious food that won't cost you an arm and a leg. Of course, asking your friends to bring their special dishes is one way to keep the celebration easy on everyone, that's why Clara Olé launched their Potluck Foodfest campaign so that everyone will get to know how convenient yet healthy and delicious home-cooked meals can be!

Here's a look at the launch that I attended this summer:
Clara Olé's Johanna Juban (who hosted the program of Iñigo's party) with event host (and new mom) Gelli Victor.
Gelli and Johanna asked the guests to share their #DiskarTips in the kitchen and the home. This is mine.
Someone who had a lot of #DiskarTips is celebrity host Amy Perez who is mom to three sons. Like me!
Here's Amy preparing a dish out of leftovers made new and delicious with Clara Olé!

A big reason why Clara Olé picked me as one of their series of celebrations is I live in a condominium. Condos these days are notorious for being tiny. That's why people don't like to cook because the kitchen is the same as the bathroom! Joke, joke. But you know what I mean, right? Not only is there no time to cook, there's no space to cook either!

Thankfully, I live in an older condo so my unit is actually quite big. I have a big kitchen! And I'm a good cook, too. But I haven't really cooked amazing meals since becoming pregnant in 2010 because I'm just overwhelmed by... everything. I mean, I still cook gourmet dishes when I find the time (which is sooo rare), so most of the time, it's a lot of adobo, fried chicken, spaghetti, pork chops in our house. And deliveries from Chinese restaurants for vegetable dishes!

But since discovering Clara Olé this year, napadalas na ang pagluto ko ulit. I've cooked spicy tuna pesto, three-cheese spaghetti, pizza, pork barbecue. Cooking special dishes is really easy now because of Clara Olé's arsenal of sauces, marinades, mixes, jams and jellies, and a whole lot more.

With all that, hindi na talaga mahirap magluto, diba??? You can now cook for your families and even your friends! Mag-organize na ng your very own #ClaraOlePotluck party! At Iñigo's birthday party, these are just two of the delicious things we ate and drank:
Pork barbecue marinated in Clara Olé Hickory BBQ marinade.
A refreshing drink made of Clara Olé Truly Fruity Blueberry Thrill Syrup
and calamansi soda! My son Vito loved this!

Super fun! Super yummy! Thanks again, Clara Olé, for making my son's birthday extra special!

My favorite family Instagram pics this month

This post is brought to you by SMART Communications.

Mother's Month (yep, I feel like I was celebrating Mother's Day all month long) is ended and I am just overwhelmed at the past month. Sobrang daming nangyari! Iñigo's birthday celebrations, my first blog workshop, a lot of work for blog clients, a lot of work for Baby Magazine—all that on top of my daily duties as mom and wife. I don't think I breathed at all the past four weeks!!!

While it feels like a blur, I'm glad I have many snapshots of the past wonderful and exhausting month. My husband has dozens of beautiful photos taken by his Olympus and I really ought to share those with you, but what I do have that's quick to access, to share and to savor are the photos on my Instagram. Here are my favorites this month:

Heehee, it's almost all Iñigo in the photos!

Vito has some understanding of social media now and most times, I have to ask his permission to post his photos, sometimes even to take his photos. Piero, meanwhile, is a whirlwind of movement and so it's really hard to get a photo of him that isn't blurry. Good thing I still have Iñigo who loves the camera!

I'm so happy there's Instagram. Thanks, SMART, for the iPad Mini and iPhones and an Internet connection I can rely on!!! My life as a mother, a wife, a friend and a freelance writer and editor has really changed (in fact, it is made possible!) by the fact that I have amazing gadgets and a reliable connection to the outside world. The one drawback? I'm addicted to Facebook and Instagram!

I actually came late to the Instagram game and I'm not even good at it. Apparently, styled photos and beautifully staged moments attract a bigger audience. Nothing wrong with that! That's how the game is played, I just happen to be obstinate and maybe even old. As with blogging, I'm just on Instagram to share my life. I'm not on social media to inspire or to teach or to be a good example. I'm just here to celebrate my happy, chaotic, messy, wonderful, amazing life! And if anyone wants a peek, you're welcome! Because that's also another reason why I blog and am sharing away on Facebook or showing photos of my kids on IG—I want to be honest and personal, to make friends, to see your life, too, as you see mine, and mine may not always be pretty but it's always full of love!

My favorite new tiny thing: Lysol To Go

$

This post is brought to you by Lysol To Go.

Since becoming a mother five years ago, I've always had some disinfectant in my diaper bag. Alcogel, alcohol, antibacterial wipes—you name it, it's there. One thing I didn't have was a can of Lysol. Even though I knew it's one of the most powerful disinfectants and the brand most recommended by U.S. pediatricians, a canister was just too big to put in my already bursting diaper bag.

So imagine my huge surprise and delight when I found out that Lysol made a cute and compact size! Called Lysol To Go, the mini can fits into the palm of my hand. Perfect for slipping into diaper bags, kikay kits, office desk drawers, car glove compartments, everywhere! The even better news is it's finally here in the Philippines!

I'm one of the lucky moms who got a sample when Lysol invited me and some mommy bloggers to a road cruise around Bonifacio Global City. Riding a Black Fleet bus and munching on Wildflour pastries, we mommies bonded over tips and stories on motherhood.
We were spoiled with a dinner at 2nd's at Bonifacio High Street and bouquets of pretty flowers.
I really enjoyed dinner, especially with my seatmates (from left) Donna Donor of Everyday Adventures, Denise Rayala of Royal Domesticity, Earth Rullan of Earthling Gorgeous, and Yen Dreyfus of The Tummy Traveler. Loved our super morbid conversation, mommies!

Lysol has always been a trusted friend of homemakers. From my Lola Auring and my Mama and now to me, Lysol is our choice to keep our homes clean and healthy for our families. Now, hindi lang sa bahay ako secure about cleanliness. Even outside the home because of Lysol To Go Spray. Hooray!

Okay, mga mommies, Lysol To Go is available in Crisp Linen scent. It's out this month at supermarkets and drugstores (SRP P150 for 28g/1 oz.). Buy one for you and one for your kid's schoolbag! Ugh. I hate the school year because ever since Vito went to school, he's always bringing home germs and sicknesses. So, Lysol To Go, protect my baby!

How I plan meals (a beginner's guide by a beginner)

$
0

This post is brought to you by Electrolux.

Planning meals is simple, right? My husband says it's something like this: Monday is pasta, Tuesday is Filipino ulam, Wednesday is meatloaf, Thursday is anything fried, Friday is fish, Saturday is burgers, Sunday is pizza. Not exactly like that but something like that. Just plan meals with that in mind and repeat every week.

It sounds really simple except that I have two kids who only like spaghetti and hotdogs ("The perfect food!" So says Vito.), a baby who eats soft food, a husband who likes everything fried and grilled, and me who's happy with tinola and nilaga forever. Laging merong hindi happy!!!

How does one deal with this?

I never learned planning meals because I was raised by a grandmother who went to the market every morning. So kung ano yung makita niya na special ingredient or yung kararating lang from the farm/sea, she buys those and then plans the day's meals around them. When I lived with my parents naman, Papa also had to work with the budget Mama gave him that day. So when Mama gave him (and eventually me) P500, marami kaming mabibili. Pag P100 lang ang budget, tipid talaga. So this thing called meal planning? It's super pang-mayaman chore for me.

My grandparents and parents always told us, "Eat what's on the table." We accepted this kasi hindi kami mayaman so kung ano ang nakahanda, yun lang talaga ang pagkain. If hindi mo kainin yun, gutom ka talaga.

But now I live in abundance. The fridge is full, the pantry is stocked with cookies and cereals and bread and other yummy wonders. So between the vegetable dish on the table and the knowledge that there's a Nutella sandwich waiting to be made in case they get hungry, the kids (and sometimes the husband) choose the other option.

What do I do?!

For starters (because I really should start doing this), I'm going to follow my husband's suggestion and plan the weekly menu. This week, it looks like this:

What I considered:
  1. Start the week by cooking the food that will spoil quickly, like vegetables.
  2. I also planned seafood at the start of the week instead of the traditional Friday because I wanted to cook the shrimp while it was still at its freshest.
  3. Always have an ulam during the day that the kids will like. So at dinner, they can eat their leftover ulam from lunch in case they don't like the ulam at dinner.
  4. Dinner is a good time to introduce new dishes to the kids. They don't really eat a lot at dinner because they're still busog from merienda and they know they'll have their glass of milk at bedtime. And yet, so far, they've been welcome to the food we introduce to them. Well, except the shrimp. They didn't even touch it.

Lunch for the grown-ups the next day, by the way, is usually the leftovers from dinner before. I just add something new for the kids para kumain talaga sila. It's also good for them to see the new food from the night before, to familiarize them and to give them another chance to try it.

Today was leftovers day! Dapat Spam for the kids plus leftovers but the kids just ate the veggies. So hooray! The shrimp in creamy sauce was a miss, though, while the kalabasa and beans in gata was a hit.

My new meal plan seems to be working so far, although I'm sure I'll be tweaking it as I go. Can you help me, mommies? How do you plan your meals? How do you incorporate all of the tastes of your family members?

I'll be talking (and asking you!) more about tips and tricks in the home and kitchen, mommies. Electrolux has a campaign called #DoMoreWithLess to encourage maximizing resources, saving money and food, and recycling food and materials.

You can check out their Facebook page The Electrolux Little White Book for many suggestions on managing your home, recycling, saving, and even making sandwiches.

They have silly jokes, too.

If you share your own tips, you can win a prize!!!

Join join join the contest! Ako lahat ng "What can you do with...?" contests ng Electrolux sinalihan ko na pero hindi ako nananalo pa. I still have hope!

P.S. Don't forget to share with me on the comments below your meal-planning tips!

Family fun at Anvaya Cove Beach and Nature Club

$

The Sales clan had a fun family vacation at Anvaya Cove Beach and Nature Club in Bataan. (Thanks, Mom and Dad!) It's so easy to get there. Just take NLEX and then SCTEX and then forest forest forest and then—TADA!—Anvaya Cove.

I like Anvaya Cove. Parang I want to buy a house there! As for the resort itself, it's very nice! Beautiful and big pools. Gorgeous amenities. Nice beach. Lots of thoughtful touches like pails of water for rinsing sand off feet, a retractable cover over the pools to shield swimmers from the noon sun, and golf carts to ferry every guest everywhere in the complex. The only thing I didn't like is the food. Hindi siya masarap. And at the breakfast buffet, there was no bacon. No. Bacon. At. All. Saaaaaaad! Buti na lang it's such a nice place!

Anyway, I'll just bombard you with photos!
It's Mr. P's first time at the beach and at a pool! Here he is being slathered with
Mustela sunscreen. Umitim pa rin siya hehe.
The boys enjoyed the playground immensely. It's not a very big play area and when it gets hot (and of course it gets hot), the playground is boiling. Still, the boys couldn't resist so we let them play in the afternoon. They didn't last very long in the heat but they loved every second of playing there.

Silly Iñigo making faces for his Papa! He's soooo cute!

(I super love Vince's photos of our kids!)

Next up: swimming at the kiddie pool!
The water is nice and warm.
Despite his face, Piero quickly adjusted to the big body of water and LOVED it.
Little boys enjoying Mama's lap.
Vito is not running here, ha.
Iñigo stayed in the shallows playing with the colorful balls.

After the pool, we explored the beach. The cove looks out to Subic Bay.
Very calm water.
Sand sand sand!
Saaaaaaaand!

After the beach, we spent the dusk with Vince's parents and siblings and pamangkins.
My happiness!
My sweetheart!
Happiest baby in the world!

And then it was time to go back to our casita to change for dinner.
They're so sweet to each other!
Off to the golf cart to bring us to our casita!
I don't have photos of our casita but it's big! Very roomy. Huge windows all looking out to trees and hills. Nice beds plus a daybed with a trundle for big families. Nice big bathroom, too. I loved that the bathroom had a drying rack for wet clothes. Very thoughtful!

After a good night's sleep and a walk around the casitas complex (the boys and I explored the forest where Iñigo was impressed with big black ants, and we checked out the lake where Vito and Piero met some loud ducks), we had breakfast. You know how I feel about that breakfast.

And then we spent some time digesting said breakfast at the Play Center. It's nice and big, with a TV and lots of movies for kids. There's books and toys, too, pero kulang-kulang na. My boys still had fun anyway. They're very easy to please.

Then we went to the Nature Trail. It was too hot to hike so we just let the kids enjoy the kiddie zip line. Vito loved it! Iñigo not so much.

And then we went up the trees! I grew up climbing trees in Antipolo while Vince used to scale walls and climb mountains. We're not afraid of heights. But when you have kids with you, suddenly everything felt very high!
We made it up the tree! But Iñigo insisted we climb down ASAP.
So proud of this brave boy!

And there you have it! Our mini vacation at Anvaya Cove! We had tons of fun. I'd love to go back and then check out Zoobic Safari and Ocean Adventure naman.

This was our first trip as a family of five and I was apprehensive—Piero didn't like long drives, I didn't think we could handle three little kids, we were afraid the boys might run wild. But after this trip, we're convinced we can go on more trips. The kids just slept in the car. The kids were super well behaved. They were cooperative and considerate. They loved all the new things to see and do. They were so fun to be with!

Of course, despite the fun we had, as soon as we hit EDSA traffic, Vito said, "Traffic! We're home!" And then when we got home, the boys were so happy to be back that Vito said, "It's good to be home." Yes, yes it is.

Honesty is always the best policy... Right?

$
0

You know how I always promised I'd be honest with you? Well, I always am. Always will be. But a strange thing happened along the way—people started telling me that they love this blog (and the silly lifestyle blog, my first blog, Topaz Horizon) because I'm so inspiring. While that should make me feel super good, it's really made me feel trapped in this bubble of goodness.

Thing is life isn't always good. Even for a mother of three perfect kids, a wife of an absolutely amazing husband, a writer who gets to work from home in her ratty tees and shorts. My life is stunning in how it's everything I always dreamed my life would be (and more!), but not every day is a good day, and sometimes those days come one after the other, but I can't blog about them because people want me to be inspiring.

"What lesson can I learn from tantrums?"

I'm not mad at my readers. I love you all! In fact, funnily enough, it's the people who don't read my blog who insist I should inspire people. "You've been given a gift! Use it! Inspire! Equip! Encourage!"

I will. I will. This influence, while strange because I'm not even Somebody Influential, isn't wholly lost on me. But now, because of it, I think I need to be inspiring, when all I want to be is to be honest. If I'm having a fantastic day, I'm going to tell you about it without ending that post with "I must always remember to be grateful for this fantastic day." If I want to say, "I have the best life in the world!", I want to say it without worrying if I sound like a huge braggart and then feel a need to tone it down because other people aren't so lucky. Same way that when I'm having a terrible day, I want to tell you about it because, dude, I'm having a terrible day. And if I want to say, "Fuck this shitty life," I want to say it. Full stop. No silver lining. No moral of the story. No inspiration.

I just want to tell my story. The story of that day. A page in this awesome life which happens to have a few chapters now and then that are all messy and chaotic and violent and angry and sad and miserable. That's all blogging is for me—telling a story. My story. But now I'm grasping for meaning in every single moment. What is the lesson from all this poop my children excrete out of their cute little bottoms? What inspiring thought can I glean from my inability to take a shower for three days? My husband and I just fought so how can I make this a learning experience?

It's so exhausting.

Honestly, some days, I'm surviving. Many days, I'm exulting. It's a good life and I love it. I love that I'm living this life—all its shittiness and greatness. But every day, I'm just simply living this life. I'm still processing it so I find it difficult to extract lessons to share when many times, I myself haven't learned the lesson yet.

I don't know how to blog anymore. I've found relief in sponsored posts that allow me to be myself and share myself but I don't have to be inspiring. I'm not saying I want to be a useless person. I'm aware that I take your time and therefore I have a responsibility to make it worth your while. I just don't know how to do that anymore—making this blog worth reading—without giving up the reason I took up blogging in the first place—to tell stories as honestly as I can.

Is meaningful blogging the only good kind of blogging? Can't honest-to-goodness or I-have-no-clue-what-I'm-doing or this-is-just-fun blogging be just as good? Can't I just tell my stories and you tell me yours and we can be friends for a few minutes? I just want to be friends. I don't need to be anyone's mentor or life peg or shining example or role model.

Unless I become perfect, of course. And wouldn't that be a boring story to tell?

My 5 tipid tips in the kitchen

$
0
0
This post is brought to you by Electrolux.

I may not be the greatest homemaker in the world but I know my way around the kitchen and I can keep house well enough. I've especially learned a few life hacks recently, which were brought about by desperation, trial and error, or by simply getting tired of throwing away food. Let me share with you my Tipid Tips!

#1 Do not make tipid.
Yes, you read that right—my first tipid tip is don't make tipid! I'm not saying you should make waldas wagas either. Basta it concerns food, products I use (especially on skin and panglinis sa house), appliances, furniture and shoes, hindi ako nagtitipid. There are things you can scrimp on but those I listed above, never. You get what you pay for and if you pay cheap, you suffer.

For example, if you buy cheap paper towels, you'll have to use more to wipe up spills kasi ang cheap napkins madaling mapunit. If you buy cheap diapers, mas madalas kailangan palitan ng diapers si baby and baka magka-allergies pa siya. So by buying cheap, you actually spend more. There's this adage, "I can't afford to be cheap." That's true because being cheap ends up being more costly. So for the things that matter, spend a little more because that extra will go a long, long way.

#2 Be prepared with a grocery list.
I feel so helpless without one. I find myself wandering the aisles with no purpose. With a grocery list (prepared well ahead of time by double checking the pantry), I never lose precious time wondering if I need to buy something or not. Plus, I don't become succumb to tempting offers to buy things I don't need because I am determined to stick to my list!

#3 Buy in bulk.
Or the biggest size you can afford. Avoid sachets! They come out more expensive because of packaging. Factor in the many trips you need to make because you ran out of dishwashing liquid, for example, then you lost time, the most expensive commodity of all!

#4 Label everything with the date you bought/cooked it.
Or put the expiration date. This is something I have recently started. I used to label only my expressed breast milk so that I knew when to use it or throw it out. Then I realized this tip also works well with frozen meat. Now I'm going to do it with leftovers.

#5 Get creative with leftovers.
I am through with throwing away leftovers! My situation kasi is pag naitago ko na in a plastic container, I forget about it. Then the refrigerator accumulates leftovers and then I look through all the plastic containers and I find a lot of food na inaamag na! So wasteful!

I'll talk about how to turn leftovers into new dishes in my next Electrolux-sponsored post. Right now, I want to share with you my other tipid tips that I posted on Instagram:

For more tips and tricks in the home and kitchen, check out the Facebook page of Electrolux: The Electrolux Little White Book. They have a campaign called #DoMoreWithLess which encourages maximizing resources, saving money and food, and recycling food and materials.

Before Piero turns 1 next month, let me share with you his baptism this summer. It was at Christ the King Greenmeadows and we had our reception at Basil White Plains. It was just family and it was lovely. Thank You, God, for our families. They are such a blessing!

The baby boy was a bit cranky because mid-morning is his nap time.
With Piero's ninangs, Tita Jacqui and Auntie Reza.
With his paternal grandparents, Lola Digna and Lolo Mon.
Piero was asleep during the entire ceremony!
My happy family. Except Iñigo hehe. He didn't like his monster shoes.
At Basil. We liked the homey feel and the delicious food.
Mr. P is awake for lunch! OOTD is knit cap and shoes from Rustan's Baby, shirt and suit from Periwinkle.
We bought these a few days before the baptism. Crammers forever!
My sweet baby darling boy!
My heartwarmers!
Iñigo in a better mood heehee.
With Lolo Jules and Ninang Jacqui.
Iñigo making kulit with Tito Ted!
With Tita Rose, Tito Ted's pretty love.
Iñigo with Tita Jacqui and cousins, Ate Nicole and Ate Rachel.
Vito and his Ninong Ted and Tita Rose. They're taking silly selfies.
Piero and Auntie Lizelle's amazing cupcakes!
The Amper family.
The Sales family.
My sons in the car as we drove home. They are the sweetest little boys, so loving and affectionate with each other. I don't know what we ever did to deserve these three.

Thank You, God, for my Vito, Iñigo and Piero. May they get to know You and love You. May they seek Your will and follow it all their lives. May You bless them with good health, surround them with love all the days of their life, and keep them in the shadow of Your wings. Bless them, Father, and bless us, their parents, so we may guide these precious boys into life everlasting with You. Amen!

School bags... for me!

$

Hahaha, sorry, this is obviously a post too late for the school year as I am sure you're all done with your shopping. But I was scouting for schoolbags for Baby Magazine (I'm the market editor, that means my job is picking all the products featured in the magazine) and I saw some really nice bags and I wished I was a little girl right about now because I'd have loved to tote these to school!

Zoo Pack Zebra little kid backpack, Skip Hop, P995. Available at Mothercare.
Love how graphic this is! Love the corduroy snout and the leaf sticking out of the mouth.

Orange Fox toddler backpack, SoYoung, P2,150, Available at Rustan's.
A closer shot. The canvas is oiled so it's waterproof and stain-proof.

Pink Fawn insulated cooler bag, SoYoung, P1,350. Available at Rustan's.
Lots of compartments inside. And lots of love, too!

These bags and more of my picks will be featured in the July-August issue of Baby Magazine. Make sure to grab a copy so you can check out all the adorable animal-themed bags I picked out.

Meanwhile, my boys were so lucky to get nice bags from their fans. Thanks so much, Wildkin, Lily & Tucker and Avon!

Vito picked out this Wildkin bag for himself (robots are very cool for Vito), and this is his schoolbag for the new school year:
The Wildkin Pack n Snack Backpack, P1,400.
To see more designs and to order, go to the Facebook page of Wildkin Philippines.
This is a Lily & Tucker bag and I picked out the dinosaur print for Iñigo even though he isn't going to school yet (he's only 3!).
Lily & Tucker Medium Backpack, P1,099.75
To see more designs and to know where to buy, check out the Facebook page of Lily & Tucker.
We got a set of Avengers bags from Avon and the boys loved them! But I kept only the troller and the backpack (the rest I gave away) because Vito decreed these bags are for traveling.
Call your Avon lady to order!

If you want me to do a detailed review of the Wildkin and Lily & Tucker bags, just tell me! I like them both very much!

Tantrum over

$
0
0
Halloooo dear readers! Okay, I just finished replying to all the lovely comments on my tantrum post last week. Tantrum post? Yes. Remember when I raged about how I believe honesty is the best policy when it comes to blogging and how I railed against being held up as an inspiration? Yes, that post.

It wasn't just Piero who was behaving badly last week.

Ngayon na nahimasmasan na ako at matapos kong basahin lahat ng opinions niyo, I realized I was being childish. What could possibly be wrong with my readers wanting me to be inspiring? It's not like you asked me to be evil or be perfect or be a saint.

The tantrum happened because last month, perhaps because it was Mother's Day month, I got a number of emails telling me I was an inspiring mom. At first, I was elated and then I felt embarrassed and then I panicked. Two letters (and the readers who sent them said I can paraphrase) tipped me over the edge:

  • "I gave up my job because of you. I was so inspired that you are enjoying your kids! I admit that my situation is a little harder than yours as money is tight, but I am with my baby and that's what matters."
  • "Like you, I never wanted to have kids. But I see you so happy with your three boys that I was inspired to start my own family! My boyfriend is thrilled that I finally agreed to have his babies!"

I replied to them in panic: "DO NOT GIVE UP YOUR JOB IF MONEY IS A PROBLEM!" and "DO NOT HAVE KIDS! THEY ARE SO EXHAUSTING!"

I seriously believed I was ruining people's lives!

(Please don't make decisions because of my decisions!)

My two readers and I had a little back-and-forth where they reassured me that Mommy is not starving and Mommy Wannabe is planning to have kids a few years after the wedding pa naman. But before we had those email exchanges, I wrote the blog post.

Now that time has passed and you have so generously told me that I'm inspiring not because I'm amazing, but it's precisely because I fail so many times (thanks a lot haha) that inspires you. Well, the fact that I either try again or I shrug it off and say, "That didn't work so eff it! On to the next adventure!", that's what you find great about this blog.

So, yes, if living honestly—from the things I buy and products I use to my sometimes brutal, always beautiful thoughts on marriage and motherhood—is inspiring, then I can do that. I can certainly do that. It's not always going to be pretty over here, it's not always going to be amazing and it's never going to be perfect, but it will always always be real.

Whining done, tantrum over. Thank you for being patient with me, my dearest, dearest readers!

P.S. Martine de Luna of Make It Blissful wrote today about how to manage our expectations when our favorite bloggers change. I liked it very much especially since in my previous post, one of my readers called out breastfeeding moms who now like formula. I think Martine addressed the issue well—people change, people choose what they want to show the public, the world of blogging has changed itself and some have adapted (like me, I now have a lot of sponsored content)—but these don't mean the blogger is now fake.

To the best father in the world

On Friday night, after we arrived home from our trip out of town, I fell asleep exhausted. I was squeezed in between my just-as-tired sons and my last thought was, "I have to get up and unpack the wet clothes." But I faded to black.

Naturally, as soon as I woke up at 5 in the morning, I scrambled out of bed to do just that. I didn't need to, however. The wet clothes were in the laundry room, hung and dry. The suitcases were unpacked. The dirty clothes in the hamper. Nearly everything already packed away. I had nothing left to do. And there, in the growing light of the day, I thanked God for my husband, Vince.

My Vince is a man of few words. Well, spoken words. He's a writer so he has a lot of words in him! That's what made me fall in love with him in the first place. As the years passed, I found many more reasons to fall in love with him but nothing prepared me for the love I feel now for him when he became the father of my children.

He is always serving us, me and the kids.

He lets me nap, which, as all moms of little kids know, is a huge deal.

He takes care of the kids so I can work or go to the salon or see my friends. Many people always ask me, "How can you leave your kids with Vince? I can never leave my kids with their daddy. And no yaya? My kids will die!" I never know how to respond to this.

He washes butts, changes diapers, gives the boys their baths. In fact, the kids prefer baths with their Papa.

He's an amazing bedtime story storyteller, the entertainment-provider, the cool parent, the enabler of all things fun.

He taught Vito how to read!

He's always the ones teaching the kids things. He insists he's not a patient man but whenever I see the boys after I wake up from my nap, they always have a new skill, a new game, a new word, a new happiness, all because their Papa taught them something while I was sleeping.

He's the one in charge of toilet-training. In fact, he's the one in charge. Period.

Vince is all that and more. Every day he inspires me to become a better parent because he's the one with the tender heart, the bigger patience, the resolve to try again and try better if he failed.

I thought Vince got lucky when he married me haha. So glad to know that I'm really actually the lucky one. Happy Father's Day, my love! Thank you for always being there for me and our boys. Thank you for being more than the world's definition and expectation of what a daddy should be. You always did do more than what was asked of you. We love you!

BTS on the Mango OOTD of me and my boys

A few people commented on the tantrum photo of Piero that I used in two blog posts recently. What was happening there, they asked? Well, toddlers have tantrums, you know. "But Mr. P is such a happy baby! Why would he have a tantrum??" Well, because he's still a normal human baby and he throws a fit every now and then—on a daily basis in fact!

Dearest darling readers, kayo talaga, ha. Just because I post photos of my family always smiling doesn't mean we don't cry, we don't get mad, we don't fight, we don't yell in frustration or weep in exhaustion. We're just like you, struggling to get through the day! Neither am I projecting an image of utter happiness if I choose to just post photos of us smiling away. I mean, kadiri naman if I post pictures of myself when I'm crying, right? For me, posting drama and nega stuff is more papansin. Plus, I'm so ugly pa naman when I cry! Yuck.

Anyway! The story of that tantrum photo is we were doing a sponsored post for Mango for my lifestyle blog Topaz Horizon, and I got a few matching outfits for me and the boys. Piero would have none of that stylish nonsense.

Here he is refusing to pose with me. He'd rather crawl around and about. And my face, right? Blank stare. Dead eyes. Panis smile.

Vito's face says it all actually.

This shoot is going nowhere!

Buti na lang I had one kid who saved the day mostly because he liked his outfit.

And kisses!

Whew!

My kids actually love being on my blogs and on Instagram. They just don't like trying on clothes! There goes my plan to make them models! Sayang. Cute pa naman sila.

Yummy recipes made from leftovers

This post is brought to you by Electrolux.

My family does not like leftovers. So I try to cook ulam that's just enough for all five of us and our two kasambahays. But sometimes there are still leftovers. Ang hina talaga namin kumain! Even the kasambahays don't eat a lot kasi both of them are scared to get fat. What!?

So the leftovers don't get eaten and then on weekends, I clean out the ref and I find forgotten leftovers of I don't even remember when I cooked them and of course, I throw them away. It is a terrible thing to throw away food kahit na it's not a lot of food. Madalas it's just a half-eaten chicken nugget or a cup of spaghetti sauce or two matchbox-sized pieces of adobo pero wala ng sabaw. Yung tipong "Isang kagat na lang, hindi pa inubos," or "Nahiya pa sa last piece!"

To minimize us throwing out perfectly good food, I have a few ideas on recycling leftovers:
These are pizzas my sons made out of leftover spaghetti sauce, hotdogs and chicken nuggets.
I used leftover rice to make this cheesy chicken and rice casserole. Recipe here.
I used leftover rice and chicken to make this delicious risotto. Recipe here
Leftover spaghetti noodles can be used for chicken noodle soup.
Cook leftover lechon, which is mabilis mapanis, into yummy lechon kawali.
With jam, peanut butter, cookie butter or Nutella, we turn bread crusts into tasty rolls.
Crumble leftover chocolates onto ice cream for added texture and flavor.

How about you? What do you do with leftovers?

For more tips and tricks in the home and kitchen, check out the Facebook page of Electrolux: The Electrolux Little White Book. They have a campaign called #DoMoreWithLess which encourages maximizing resources, saving money and food, and recycling food and materials.

Your precious moments captured by Pampers

This post is brought to you by Pampers.

Because I have a baby who will turn one year old in a week, I'm still not over with firsts. First step, first walk, first word, first everything!
First time at an airport!
First plane ride!
Well, to be honest, my youngest, Piero, isn't the only one with firsts. My two older kids, Vito and Iñigo, have their firsts, too!
First time to draw on fogged up glass.
Piero's first time in a jacuzzi.

It's so fun watching my boys grow and make their way into the world. I'm also so glad I have a husband who loves capturing these firsts (and seconds and thirds!) with his camera. We have thousands upon thousands of photos of our kids! We literally wipe out our budget when it's time to print the photos and fill up the albums and picture frames!

Many of our friends remark on how diligent we are with our family's photos. Well, it's all Vince. He LOVES looking at our kids and crying over them hehehe. He super adores the boys and we're so lucky he works from home because he's always there to capture these fun and fabulous years.

If you want beautiful photos of your family, too, I highly recommend getting a good camera. Vince's camera is an Olympus OMD EM5 while mine is an Olympus EP3 (but I use my iPhone 6 camera more). That's why our photos are soooo clear and bright and beautiful. It's really worth it to splurge a little on the best camera you can afford because our kids are growing up so fast. We must take photos of them!

But if getting a camera isn't an option right now, get diapers instead.

Wait, what?

Yes, you read that right. Pampers, only the world’s leading diaper brand and my baby boys' diaper, brings you the very first Pampers First Family Photo Shoot in select stores in Metro Manila! Pampers will offer a free photo shoot done by professional photographers and you get two wet-proof family portraits that can last for up to 100 years. A hundred years!

Plus, if you have water-damaged photos of your baby, Pampers can help you restore and even transform them into waterproof portraits! Taking back my joy

I'm going to come right out and say it: the past year has been tough. I use "has been" instead of the more definitive "was" because I'm still wading out of this but I see the light at the end of the tunnel and that light grows stronger and brighter each day so I know I'm coming out of the woods and the trying times are going to be over.

What happened?

Well, I got pregnant and it was a miserable pregnancy. Lots of health issues that I didn't talk about publicly because I was afraid verbalizing problems may attract my biggest fear, which was losing the baby. Thankfully that didn't happen and I gave birth to Piero, the happiest little boy in the world but, woah, three kids is suddenly a LOT.
December 2014

I used to think that I can write a book on how to juggle motherhood, marriage, homemaking, career and gorgeousness because I truly believed I had it all. Happy and still very sexy marriage? Check. Adorable, healthy and smart kids? Check. Lovely home? Check. Fabulous career? Check. Still smokin' hot even though I'm a mom? Check. Then the third baby arrived and everything unraveled.

Sex? What sex? You know what a sexless marriage is? It's not fun and it's not intimate. Adorable kids? What adorable kids? They exasperate, infuriate and defy me every day. Lovely home? Well, it's a mess. Legos, crumbs, rice, smelly socks everywhere. Not even my favorite scented candles can smother the smell of those stinky feet and sweaty little bodies! Fabulous career? What career? With three little boys and the last one being a tiny baby, my career fell many slots down my priority list. And smokin' hot? I can't even find the time to shower or brush my teeth. My belly still looks like I just gave birth and everything is flabby and soft.

* * * * * * *

I am a wife. I am a mom. I have a wonderful husband. I have three healthy and amazing children. I live in a beautiful home that's fully ours. I have a job that allows me to stay home with my family. I look fine for a 38-year-old woman. I am healthy. I am alive!!! But this past year, all I focused on was not the abundance of this glorious life but the imperfections of it. The mess. The missed opportunities. The little irritations. The busyness. The exhaustion. The feelings of ugliness, resentment, despair.

Then one day, a little verse that I love came to me gently as I was flipping through inspirational blogs. John 10:10 says, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly."

This is a favorite verse because I loved the promise when Jesus said, "I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." Growing up poor, I always wanted that abundant life. Then my eyes wandered to the part of the verse that I always ignored: "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy," and I realized that I do have this abundant life. My God! How You have blessed me! But instead of feeling gratitude and wonder at my abundance, I have allowed Satan to steal my joy, kill my spirit, and destroy my peace.

March 2015

* * * * * * *

I see now that the past months have been filled with God's calling to me to come out of my malaise. Old friends like JaneMartineGinger and Nicole came calling, encouraging me to focus anew on things I love outside my family, which is blogging and writing. Then God sent new friends my way like Cheka, Rica and Marilen, who talked with me about family and marriage.

I'm sure they didn't know what I was going through and they may not know that God was using them to get through to me, but as we talked about random things online, on the phone, when we see each other, I was refreshed, revived, renewed. And I resolved to take care of myself, my home, my marriage, my passions, my blessings. And I resolved to ignore the negative people, the little irritations, and the whispers of discontent that come my way.

I will fix my eyes on God. I will fix my eyes on my family. I will fix my eyes on loving and positive friends. I will fix my eyes on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8), and those are my children, my husband, my friends, my God. Nothing else should matter!

* * * * * * *

My husband is also hard at work with me, making sure this family will be strong and stable. We had our unspoken resentments, which eventually blew up into big fights where ugly words were flung at each other. We simmered in fury and disappointment.

Then just recently, as summer waned and the rains came, Vince and I had a long talk about commitments and vows and how we are afraid we're losing each other. We're together 24/7 but those hours are filled with children and work and we hardly have time to catch our breath so when the rare instances we find ourselves alone together spring upon us, we don't know what to do. We were fast becoming strangers. So we talked and talked and talked, and held hands, and cried, and laughed, and promised we were going to be together till death do us part. Not for the kids' sake, but for ours.

Vince and I are on a mini honeymoon now. Just here at home. We send off the kids to the playground and we relish our alone time together. It feels like we're rediscovering each other and I won't say anything anymore but we are definitely no longer just roommates!

* * * * * * *

So yes, it looks like I'm coming out of the woods. But not through my own strength. Whether they were aware of it or not, my husband, my always-forgiving kids, and my friends all helped me along the way. But definitely it was God, patient and calm and steadfast, who pulled me out of that darkness.

As I type this, the day is coming to an end, I'll be faced with yet another crazy evening of a noisy, messy dinner, kids who refuse to sleep because they want one more story, and I will be tired and exasperated, but I will remember (and I hope Vince reminds me should I forget!) that I am living the very best days of my life. The very best.

Don't lose sight of that, Frances! These days will not last forever—the exhaustion of it, the fleeting joys of it. Just cling to God because it is only through Him that I can be the best wife, mother, friend, and me that I can be.

Isaiah 40:31 says, "Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." So there, dear mommy friends, God is with us!

Now I gotta go prepare dinner. Time to soar!

(I found so many old photos I've never shared with you! That's why the pics here are of us with different hair haha. Do you want me to share more?)

This post is brought to you by SMART Communications.

As a SMART subscriber, I'm living the #SmartLife. You know what it's like? Fabulous!

No office? No problem. I can work from home.

No car? No problem. I can always Uber.

No idea where a meeting with a client is? No problem. I can Google its address and Waze my way there.

No idea what time I'll get home because of horrific traffic jams? No problem (well...). I can always entertain myself with Facebook and reading my favorite blogs.

But I will confess that there's one part that's not so fab about it:

A video posted by Frances (@francesasales) on

Haha, my kids talaga! My #SmartLife is overtaken by my kids!

Seriously, I'm really happy I switched to SMART. Ever since I became a SMART mom, my life has improved by leaps and bounds. All my work is done online. Almost all of my entertainment I get online. And if I'm not home and am worried about my family, I get peace of mind with just a call or a text or a message on Facebook. This is the life!

BTS of our family photo by Pampers

This post is brought to you by Pampers.

Last Sunday, my family and I went off to Marketplace at Power Plant Mall to have our family picture taken. Pampers had a fun promo that ran for a few days last week. Called Pampers First Family Shoot, this activity invited all families who have diapers on their grocery shopping list to drop by select supermarkets and have their family photo captured for free.

Since two of my boys, Iñigo and Piero, are Pampers users, we were definitely going to avail of the freebie! But, more importantly, we seldom have a family photo. There's always the kids, or me and the kids, then the rare photo of Vince and his sons, and even more rarely, all five of us in one photo. With this promo, we can all be in one picture together!!!

Here are a few behind-the-scenes shots of our Pampers shoot at the supermarket:

There was a cute setup of a baby's room—a crib converted to a day bed, pillows and toys, a sidetable with a lamp and a picture frame on it, and benches. Very cozy! On the side was a little vanity with a well-lit mirror, brushes and combs, and even a bit of makeup so that families can freshen up a bit before the shoot.

Pampers had to fix the crib setup for our big family kasi hindi kita yung product nila hehe.

And after just a few shots, nag-umpisa nang magwala ang mga bata.

Vince and me in our own happy world, the kids in their own violent one.

Okay, okay, we can't ignore the kids anymore!

And that's a wrap! Whew. I wonder if the photographer got anything useful!

He did pick one but sana ako ang pinapili niya. Heehee. It's okay really. That's just me being an editor. I have years of going through thousands of photos and picking the best one! So nag-work mode ang brain ko. Let it go, me!

We got two copies of one pose. These were printed on wet-proof paper that will last 100 years. The Pampers team proved it truly can resist water by rubbing a drenched cotton ball all over our freshly printed photos!

And here's our photo that came in a free picture frame, too!

Here are a few shots of the other families who use Pampers diapers and got their photo taken at the Pampers First Family Shoot activity last week:

Happy families! That's a Pampers family!

Piero's 1st birthday!

$

My littlest little boy turned a year old this month and we're soooo happy he's made our lives perfect. Well, he turned it upside down, spun it around, made us lose hundreds of hours of sleep, and basically just left us breathless in his wake! Yes, Piero is just what our family needed. I'll talk more about this, how he completed us, in another post but for now, let's celebrate my wonderful darling boy's first ever birthday!

Here's the little tiger! We had a tiny celebration at home—just us, just cake, just gifts, just love. We put up the usual festive party decor, we got him a small but rich chocolate cake, we shook out the Tigger costume worn previously by his older brothers, and we tried to convince said brothers that this birthday was Piero's birthday and can we please please make it all about Piero.

Well, they tried. But Vito and Iñigo couldn't help it—they wanted to be the star of the show, too! Check out Iñigo hogging the camera. Now I know why youngest kids have the least number of photos—their older siblings keep stealing the show!

So let's go back to sweet darling Piero's birthday. Here's his simple but fun cake:
I love this cake! It's the Truffle Cake from Mary Grace Café. I love it I love it I love it. And I love how the colorful birthday candles made it festive. Iñigo insisted the balloon candles were lollipops and he wondered aloud why we were burning the "wopops."

Where's Piero?

"Here I am!" Check out how he pushes his brothers aside. Heehee.

I like how assertive he is. Piero has a very big personality. I know that in photos he's always smiling gently, like he's the sweetest boy in the world, but he's actually quite the dominant personality, always bullying his older brothers about.

But in this case, the bigger boys won...

... and broke Piero's heart. My poor baby! Look at his face!

Omigoodness, there he goes, trying to grab a piece of his birthday cake before his brothers devour it.

He finds an opening and takes a gooey handful, which he then stuffs into his mouth.

And now he's wondering why he did that. Hahahahaha!

The birthday boy may have been disappointed with his birthday cake but he was excited about opening his gifts!

Umm. Yes, his face may look like that but he did enjoy opening his gifts!

See? He's clapping! Well, he clapped when he saw Baymax. He loved Baymax.

So that the older boys won't get envious, we also got them little gifts. The toys are actually for Vince and me haha. We spend 24/7 with our kids and so we play a lot together. Sometimes Vince and I get bored with the old toys so we buy new ones! Everyone's happy!

Look who's happy. Papa Vince! He adores his bunso baby boy. Vince was telling me this week that with Piero, time really felt like it passed by too fast. I told him I felt the same way. It must be because we had two other boys that grabbed our attention. Vito was toilet-trained and started school. Iñigo started talking. The first two boys spent their days killing each other one minute and then being BFFs the next. It's been a very busy year.

I'm glad Vince and I work from home. We're still able to focus on Piero while attending to our other boys. Still, it's been a breathless year. We've been up to our necks in childcare. Three kids all under 5! We're overwhelmed! But, yes, despite the chaos, the mess, the exhaustion, we're gloriously happy. Piero was that final piece. He truly made us finally go, "At last. Our family is complete!"

Happy birthday, dearest Piero! Oh, the joy you've brought to me, your Papa and your brothers! You are perfect in every way and it's remarkable how you keep getting more amazing every day. How lucky are we to have you in our crazy life. May you always be strong and healthy, may you always have love and friendship surround you, may you be filled with wisdom and compassion, and may you bring joy to others as you've brought joy to us. Happy birthday!
